I'm thinking the R3 plate has a bigger center hole, with more holes around it to accept the reinforcing due to flanged axle. or can someone school me on this! also how do I tell right from left by looking at a bare plate?

I would think the park brake cable hole would be toward the front of the car when the plate is installed.

The hole size for the standard backing plates is 1 5/16". The backing plates used for the flanged axle rear ends have a 2 11/16" dia. hole. Backing plates are stamped LH and RH. Also when you hold the plate with the drum side facing facing you, the hole for the emergancy brake cable woll be on the left for the left plate and the right for the right plate.

Thanks Andy, I'm trying to findout what backing plates were modified to fit my 1/2ton Champ rearend?(many years ago by my Father) he centered them and did some re-drilling,so they're either Avanti rear plates or pass. car front 11" and he drilled for e-brake cable?

The R3 backing plates (flanged axles) have larger hold down holes 1/2 " (and bolts).
