I want to install an electronic unit in place of the non-functioning speedometer in my '64 Daytona. The in-dash measurement seems to be between 4 and 4.5 inches in diameter. The catalog gauges are mostly listed at 3 3/8 or 5 inches. Do you gentlemen know the size of the original speedo or have a disassembled dash to measure? I would like to have the replacement on hand before disassembly. Thank you.

Aftermarket guages are either larger or smaller than the original Studebaker units. Check out Classic Instruments. They'll modify you gauga to electric and should be able to keep the same face (retrofit). I'm sure it's not cheep, but it is an option.

Buy the tach bezel to down size the speedo to the standard size. SASCO has them.

With my weak old eyes I would prefer a larger rather than smaller speedo. Is enlarging the hole in the dash a reasonable alternative.
I would probably install an = size tach next to it if there's room.

The speedo cannister measures right at 4&1/2" The holes in the inst. face plate are JUST slightly bigger than that. The area between the inst. holes is 11/16". By the time you figure for speedo bezel overlap, there's not much room for a larger instrument![}:)]

BTW, those measurements are from a disassembled dash cluster I have on my desk at the moment.;)

Thank you Mr. Biggs, I was hopeing someone would have access a panel and be able to make measurements. If I can't afford to have the original converted a 3 3/8 will have to do.

Yo Biggs, I just found out VDO makes a 4 inch speedo. Does it appear that it would fit in that unit you have?

Which dimension do they use as that FOUR INCH? Talkin' the body or the bezel?[?]

Mr. Biggs, There is always one more question isn't there? I'll have to contact VDO to find out.
