Hey guys and gals well i found a 62 studebaker V6 4 door AT lark with 50,400 original miles. Its red and interior is in great shape over all its a 7 out of 10 shape. The exaust, brakes are new and has had a engine rebuild. The owner says there is a oil leak at the front seal looks like its coming from where the trany is. He says its so liitle you don't even notice a drop on the oil stick. Now is this leak some thing i should worry about?? The guy was asking $6900 for it and i talked him down to $5500. But i have a problem finding insurance for it they keep telling me i need to garage it to be coverd. But i live in a apartment so i don't have that option at this time. Well is this car worth the money or should i keep looking. A little back ground on me im 25 in the USMC and have a good DD this would be my sunday church car and movie nights. Thanks for any inputs from the pros

six or V-8, stick or auto, 2 dr. or 4 dr. Need lots of information to assess value. I have 4 Studebakers insured with State Farm and none are garaged. If someone knew where you were at, maybe someone close could be more help.

Welcome, David.
Can't really advise on value without knowing the model. If you can get the body tag number from the firewall under the hood (passenger side) that really gives us all the model ID we need. Also, more details on condition or, better yet, PICTURES!
My first Studebaker was a '62 Lark VI Regal four door with 3-spd/OD. I loved it.
All my vehicles are State Farm insured. I don't think they've ever asked where I keep them.Last edited by rockne10; 09-22-2010, 04:35 PM.Brad Johnson,

You can shoot the pics to me at ourbuiss@yahoo.com and I will add them to the post for you. Check the floors and frame really well before you proceed. Studes are pretty famous for rusty floors. Thats a pretty hefty price for a 4 door Lark type so it would have to be a super nice car. Stevesigpic

here's a 63 4dr lark that ended on ebay yesterday for $6090.00 in midwest, claiming a CA car with no rust issues. This is a V-8 289 that looks really clean inside and out, power brakes, TT rear end. This looks as good as most of the ones I see at shows (at least from their posted pix).
How does this compare to the one you found? Maybe it will help you asess value seeing what is out there.

From the little information that I have to go on, I would guesstimate $3000-$3500. This is assuming that it really has a Studebaker inline six and not a "V6". This may sound harsh, but if you do not know the difference between a V6 and an inline six, you probably shouldn't buy any car that is 48 years old, especially an orphan.Gary L.

Thanks guys for the advise. I think every one knows the difference between a inline 6 and a V6. I know very little about older cars but im not new to working on cars. I was going off what the owner said it had i have not even seen under the hood yet. He told me it had a V6 i know he said it had a rebuilt engine. But the guy seems like he know very little about the car so im assuming its really a inline 6. i doubt some one put a V6 in it.

I know from experience that even some that deal with used cars every day do not know the difference between an inline six and a V6. For example, when I used to advertise Jeeps with the 4.0 inline six, the advertising people always wanted to assume that all sixes were V6s. Finally, I had quite a discusion with them, at their request, explaining how the two are not the same.Gary L.
