View Full Version : Are my brakes on correctly?

I pulled the drums off of the front of my 49 2R5 today and found this:

This is the right front brake hub. The front of the truck is to the right in the picture. According to the shop manual, the self-adjusting device should be on the inside of the shoe, not visible from the drum side. Also, the shoe with the self adjusting gear should be on side toward the front of the truck. The other side of the truck is similarly arranged.

I think my shoes were put on backwards. Am I right?

Maybe it's the angle of the photo but it seems that the wheel cylinder should be nearly horozontal, not tilted as in the photo. Is it possible the entire backing plate and/or spindle assembly was switched from side to side?

Your SHOES definitely are backwards, since Lockheed style short shoes always go to the rear.

The parts book shows you are right, the adjusting hardware goes inboard and forward! [:0]

I double checked both the manual and the truck - the angle is indeed correct for these trucks. I took apart the wheel cylinder in the picture - its got cancer in the lining. I guess I'll be ordering a new one from SASCO.
