  • Transmission cleaning advice

I've finally managed to scrape off the 30 years of sludge on my '52 tranny and would like to make sure that the interior is free of equal amounts of sludge. Any suggestions on the best solvent to flush it out? I've used diesel to get grease, etc. off exterior parts but not sure what effect this would have on inner workings.
    Thanks!

Diesel or kerosene are OK for the interior. The only caution is to be sure the exterior is totally clean, so when you have the transmission cover off, you don't get exterior crud down into the bearings. I run my transmissions through the engine shop pressure washer. If you don't have that option and are going to be cleaning the interior, take the exterior to the high pressure DIY car wash booth first. If it is an OD transmission, remove the governor and solenoid. Pack those holes with old socks so no crud gets pushed in there.
