  • 63 Avanti R2 altenator

Has any one changed the orignal prestolite altenator to a GM one wire
or other type.My electric fan is pulling a lot of amps.I thinking i need a 60 or 80 amp altenator.
If i do change can i still use the original amp gauge

All of the on line Electrical Parts suppliers seem to agree that the one wire is a POS, you need the three wire like a GM factory car so you don't have to race the engine just to get it started. they have wiring diagrams for Voltmeters and maybe Ammeters though THEY don't like them.

I have been driving Studebakers my whole life with Ammeters and never had a problem with them, in fact I WANT to know what my Alternator is doing, not what the voltage is AFTER it is too low! I can see however how if you have a 150 Watt Amp. and a high power stereo with a high Amp Alternator, things could cook a lot easier!
