  • What gas to run???

When I rebuilt my 232 for my 1954 Commander Coupe I had tempered seats installed for the valves to close against since there is no longer any leaded gas, now my question is which octane should I run? the highest or the lowest which in my area is from about 92 to 84 octane any suggestions...

I'm running regular in my re-built 289 Champ with thin head gaskets, and do'nt see that as a problem!

Hi Dominic, the highest compression engine needs the highest octane.I assume your seats are ready for unleaded fuel, greets Dick Waterreus
ps low is 6:1 high is 9:1 compression so if needed measure the afterrebuilt compression.

Of the 85 vs. 89 vs. 91 in my area, I run the 87 oct.

The 85 should work fine if you run low (stock) ignition timing values. I run my timing quite high so I run the 89 around town but on longer trips (200+ miles) I run the 91 oct. stuff.

The higher timing gives the throttle a little more snap and a touch more milage. Though the milage is a wash (or worse) because of the higher 91 oct. fuel cost.

No significant difference between 87 and 92 in the Champ. Steve

Very interesting find this weekend. I drained the 92 octane out and refilled with the 87 octane and now the car runs smooth again at low speed.
