What's the sequence for installing a new thermostat? Is it Thermostat-Gasket-Water Neck or Gasket-Thermostat-Water Neck? I only ask because the water manifold opening is flat, but the water neck has a machined indent that the thermostat fits into perfectly.

Duhhh.... [:I]

Thermostat in the indentation so gasket to the joining surfaces are flat against each other.

Yah .. the outer diameter of the T-stat should be less than the hole
in the gasket (or there is a problem). Use Permatex No2 on each side
of the gasket and you never have to worry about it leaking again. It
only requires a thin application. Its worth it though. Use it on all
water gasket applications.
