  • Vacuum on 50 champion 6

At idle what should the vacuum be for a 6cyl. 50 champion? and on running up the engine what should it be?

    Thanks

the vacuum should be 14-16 at idle.

Mine is about 3 at idle and when I start to run it up it goes to about 18. So what could be the problem?

      Thanks

I'm by no means an expert, but my guess is wore valve guides, a vacuum leak some where. In the good old days you could spray WD-40, and when you found the leak the engine would gain RPM. The new WD-40 will no burn. Maybe PB Blaster will. When you rev it up most vacuum leaks get audible, and if you can't hear it that is why I'm guessing valve guides.

'50 Champion....vacuum.....how often have I ever used those words together in a sentence??? On my poor ole '50, if you even look at the gas pedal the vacuum goes away....even with a double action fuel pump (for the wipers).....

Well the wipers work ok at idle, and if I was only getting 3in vacuum, should they work? I dissconnected the vacuum line on the carb. and let it run with the line open and the wipers still work ok. So is it the carb? I had someone rebuild it when I first put the engine in, never check it afterwards. Could something in the carb. be wrong? What about the vacuum meter in the carb? This engine was rebuilt and everthing is new as to the gaskets, I hear no leaks.

            Thanks

              Carb cleaner will work.

where are you measuring vacuum? sure it is not ported vacuum? if you have a pipe plug in the manifold tap your gauge there to make sure.

I'm using the line to the dist. from the carb. Should I measure from manifold tap?

possibly. Not sure if the carbs you're using send ported vacuum to the dist. or not. If they do, then the readings you are seeing are normal. (that is, little or no vacuum off idle, rising to a "normal" reading as soon as you crack the throttle open.)

Thanks Nate, that sounds right. Readings are ok on vacuum. Getting a rebuilt dist., have had problems since I've had this one. It was a rebuilt one, but I think it was rebuilt with wrong parts.
