Hi, Phil,

My first Hawk was a '56 Flight Hawk in those exterior colors. It was a striking looking car. It also gave me a permanent aversion to the Champion six. The Power Hawk was the highest production of all '56 Hawks and one of the best all-around cars Studebaker ever built. Does yours have the overdrive and the 4-bbl, dual exhaust?

thnx, jv.

Very nice looking Power Hawk Phil, that Salmon color is not quite as WILD as the '61 Flamingo color, looks great! :)

Be sure you keep those mud flaps, from what I can tell in your pic, those are NOT aftermarket they look like Studebaker AC3137 White gravel deflector kit. (all Studebaker cars & T cab trucks) -SCORE! [^]

Thats my favoite hawk. Are you going to bring it to Upper Miss Valley meet. I'm planning to go. Less chrome and stainless the better. For me anyway.

Is that the tangerine 56 color or as someone mentioned Salmon. I'm getting ready to paint my 56 and really haven't got a good idea of the tangerine and even with the paint chip page it is hard to imagine. Thanks

There is only one color like that in '56 it's correct name is Tangerine, I call em as I see em, thats just what it looks like.

I can see that it is way lighter than Flamingo, but I see what you mean, that color chip is way dark! Then again, they tell you that on paper they never look correct!

here's the Color Chip page:

Sorry for not responding earlier, but had to go out of town for a Final inspection of a Mechaical Project we just finished, and just got home. Thanks for all of the comments. As for the color I am not sure what the actual color is, I have been calling it Flamingo but he was calling it Salmon, It definately isn't Tangerine, which is much darker and brighter. He stated that he had it repainted the original color and has an unopened quart of the paint that was used, which goes with the car. I be able to find out what color it really is when I get the can in hand. Original or not I liked it when I saw it. We made our agreement during the Omaha Meet and drove up to his place for me to see the car, it was getting dark and the garage lighting was not to good, but was good enough for me to fall in love with the car. I drove up to Omaha from St. Louis alone, so there was no way for me to get it home from the meet, I already had my Lark in Omaha and no way to get them both home, so I decided to wait until he returned from his winter in Arizona. I had to sell one of my studes to make room for the Hawk, 6 months was ample time to sell my 51 Champion to make the necessary space. It only took 2 weeks to find a buyer for the Champion, so I have been eagerly waiting for his call to inform me that he had returned. Yes, Russ it has been a long 6 months [:p]
To all of you asking for more pix: My son-in-law is going with me to retreive the Hawk, I hope to have him help me with taking pix of the trip and will post them upon our return, as well as some better all round pix of the car.
I know Many of you really like the finned Hawks, but the 56 without the fins have always been my favorite, and when I ran accross this one it did not take me long to go for it.
When I returned home from the Omaha Meet my wife jokingly asked me how many cars I bought, of course I got the best of the joke as I saw the look on her face when I answered "Only One" ;)

PackardV-8: No overdrive, it has an automatic tranny, with 2-BBL carb and single exhaust. but that is going to be the first things to be changed, I have already purchased a 4-BBL intake from Jeff. I have the 4-BBL carb and will be installing dual exhaust as well. I will also be ordering an electronic ignition as soon as I can get some numbers off of the distributer.
StudeRich: Thanks for the info on the mudfllaps, I had just assumed that they had been added, I did not know that Studebaker had made them available.
S2DE5: I probably won't get to the Upper Miss. Valley Meet, After I get back with the Hawk, I will be gone the next 2 week-ends on my annual spring fishing trip with several long time buddies. Then there will only be about 6 weeks until the South Bend Meet, so I am going to have to do a few of the projects from the honey-do list, to be able to pull all of this off.
I have already registered the Lark for South Bend, After I get the Hawk I may or may not have time to get the Hawk ready for South Bend, I will have to play that by ear.

There were to me four years in the fifties that Studebaker really shined. '53, the Starlight coupe is one of the most memorable cars that Studebaker ever produced. '54 was just a continuation of the previous year. '56, the year of your Hawk (my favourite year and model of Hawk as well), my station wagon and my all round favourite year of the fifties. And of course, the '57s, the first year of the Packard-bakers.

Of all the Hawks, the only I would want to have is the '56 Power Hawk. I really love the Lowey Lines of that car. It's a wonderful car all round.

Lots of luck all over for your Hawk. I hope you have a ton of fun with it!:D[8D]

Wow, nice Power Hawk^^ Welcome to the club of PowerHawk owners =) (We need a registry I think)
Let me know how what you need to do to install the 4 barrel, I'd love to put one in my Power Hawk some day, (whenever I can afford it).
What's the serial #? Built in SB, Hamilton, or LA?

I agree that the colour chips are a bit off. My Power Hawk is two-tone daybreak blue with airforce blue on the roof. The daybreak blue on the chip in the file looks a little darker than what mine is, though all I know, my paint colour might not be 100% exact anyways.
