My 60 Hawk shifts into OD just fine but the "passing gear" kickdown isn't working. What steps would you recommend for troubleshooting this?

Thanks. The car and shop manual are some 60 miles away this week and I wuz jus' wonderin' about the process as I was reading another thread. Good to know the shop manual covers it and I'll check it out this weekend.

One possiblity not covered in the manuals, there is a set of points on the outboard end of the solenoid (with the cover removed) that permit the engine to "stumble" momentarily so that the gear shift will happen. Well, I found that the insulation on mine was missing, negating the points. When they opened, the missing insulation showed a 'closed' condition. I paid a "transmission expert" (not Studebaker rated) more than the cost of a good transmission to find out why I couldn't downshift, and had to find this part out for myself.

Bob,
You may have seen this link on another recent post I made in an overdrive thread. You can get a whole lot of information, including troubleshooting, in these PDF manuals from Borg Warner. Since your shop manual is far away, these may be a good substitute for you:

p.s. When you find the cause and the fix, please post the answer for us.

Thanks, DilloCrafter. Is it okay if I archive those PDFs in the Tech Tips section of the SDC website?

That's a good idea by me. The more free resources we have on the site, the better!

When I had a similar problem with my 64 Champ the trouble was that the throtle linkage was not triping the kickdown switch. A little adjustment and things worked right. Have someone mash the gas peddle while you watch what happens to the switch. This assumes that your Hawk has a similar setup.
