I need to replace the right exhaust manifold on my newly acquired '64 Avanti. I have a manifold, but needed the longer studs for the pipe and heat riser hookup. I stopped at my FLAPS yesterday and told my guy what I needed. He fished around under the counter and came up with two choices. One was a slightly longer 3/8" with 24 thread on one end and 18 on the other. The other choice was one that was the correct length, but has 18 thread on both ends. My question is- what would be wrong with just using the one with coarse threads on both ends? I don't use brass nuts. I have had good luck using anti seize compound and steel nuts.

Exhaust manifold flange studs

Either will work. The NC end is used into the exhaust manifold because cast iron doesn't take well to NF threads. The NF threads are preferred on the nut end because they clamp a bit tighter and are less likely to loosen from heat expansion and contraction.
A bit OT, but I was working on an OMC (GM) marine engine yesterday and it had beautiful stainless steel exhaust manifold studs in the heads. However, the wet boat exhaust manifolds are so thick, the studs were way too long for automotive use. Got me to wondering if anyone makes shorter ones for auto use. These were NC threads into the head and NF threads for the nut.
