  • Quick steering arms for 63 Avanti

I'm contemplating adding the quick steering arms to my '63 Avanti. Would anyone care to comment on the procedure or discuse the advantage or disadvantage of that addition. It does have power steering.

I put them on my Avanti...you'll find maybe a half-turn less lock to lock, but that's about it. Some have voiced concerns about the steering being more "darty", but I haven't noticed that...just slightly quicker response, but that assumes everything in the suspension and steering is in optimum shape.

Installation is no different than the stock steering arms. The alignment specs are the same, but it will take added adjustments to bring the alignment into spec. There were no issues with my car having that done.

Overall...if you're rebuilding your suspension, go ahead and do the conversion. If you're not, I would say wait until you do since you'll have things apart anyway.

The quick steering arms were created by Steve Blake after he bought Avanti Motors. Soemtime in the mid-70s Avanti ran out of the original Avanti steering gear boxes (three turns) and they went to a terrible box (some said it was a forklift box). Anyhow, the steering was much slower than the originals and Steve Blake didn't think that fit the image he wanted. So the quick steering arms were applied to the slow boxes to improve response. I'm not sure I would want to quicken the original power steering boxes.

I agree with 53K, if your car has the quicker 16:1 steering. However, if your car was built with manual steering with the slower 21:1 ratio steering and then later converted to power steering without changing the steering box, then your car would benefit from the shorter arms. Otherwise with the quick arms, if you sneeze, you may be off the road.

Thanks to all for the info and opinions. I have stock 16/1 power steering. At this point I think I will wait for a rebuild of the front end and then add the arms. Thanks again.
