    Tearing down a 289 out of a 61 4 speed silver hawk.

The car hasn't moved since 1969.From what i was told it's the original engine.
the body tag says 61v-4 speed.

The engine is stamped p78745,The code doesn't match the 61 289 codes i have found.
It also has an eblem like stamp with the number 20 inside of it beside the engine stamp.

    Any ideas?

Look closer. Does the 'emblem' look like maybe a clover leaf or a keystone? You are looking all the way forward, on top, driver's side, right?

You probably have a factory replacement block, or maybe a truck block.

In 1961 they were just Hawks.. No silver...no gold... Just Hawks.
Does yours have a dash plaque on the glove box door?
Are the mount ears on your 4 speed trans wide spaced (wierd looking), or narrow spaced?

It's a 1961 289. If the stamped mark looks like a keystone, it's just an inspection stamp.

I was thinking the second number was more specific to the year.

            I see now.

Being a 289 doesn't necessarily mean that it is the original engine. Order the build sheet for your Hawk from the SNM and it will indicate the engine number that was originally installed in your Hawk.

                    Thanks Gary.
I didn't realise they had the production records for specific cars there.
It's not crucial but i would like to know what i have.
                    I will do that asap.
It's a great museum. We stopped there a few years ago.
A few days later we radomly stopped at a motel in Utah that was having a studebaker meet.

The part of the Tranny that identifies whether you have the original ('61 & early '62) Chevy case T-10 or a later model (late '62-'64) Ford case T-10 is not visible in any of your pics.

It's the lower right hand mounting flange (Ear) of the front of the Trans. that differs, the '61 has the mounting boss on the bell housing quite far outboard so that it has a round extension to match the Trans. Very obvious.

There is no reason to believe that this is not an original '61 289 Engine/Trans. combo and probably the ORIGINAL so since the Engine Parts, especially internals are mostly all the same from 1956 to 1964 you have no Engine identification problems at all.
