View Full Version : Now a question about 62 Hawk scalp moldings

Just noticed that the scalp moldings around the roof on my '62 Hawk are only "chromed" in the front over the windshield. The part that runs along the sides and then dips down to the rear quarter panel is painted body color.

I figured at first that some PO thought it would be cool to paint over the chrome (stainless), but when chipping a bit of paint away, there is no shiny finish underneath. Were some of these Hawks made that way? Or is there a "snap-on" or "snap-overlay" that for whatever reason is missing on mine?

There is a sort of "clip" attached to the scalp molding right above the vent window on each side, which seems to be the dividing line between what is chromed and what is painted. I can't for the life of me understand why someone would do this.

They are stainless, not chromed. They are an "overlay" applied to the full length of the drip rail...along the front, over the top of the doors and rear quarter windows, down the C pillar to the belt line.

The clips on either side (also one in the middle of the front) are there to cover the joints between the 4 sections of overlays.

The only thing I can think of is that the PO may have had them removed when the car was painted and ruined them in the process. I know that some have removed them successfully, buy usually they get bent too badly to be reused.
