  • STUDEBAKER CHAPTER MEETING

Last night was the monthly meeting of the Manhattan Chapter. Each month we meet in a different place and then venture after dinner to an auto related place in Manhattan. Our "auto related" visit was cancelled so after dinner we ventured over to the Time Square Toys R Us to buy as many Studebaker cars we could find. At one point all of us rode the Ferris Wheel, usually for kids, but what the hey. Then we hit the Johnny Lightning, Matchbox, Maitso, and other dispalys. On our way out......we thought we were in the Green Zone in Iraq. At every door of the Toys R Us, there was a four man team of NYC police, each carrying automatic waepons, each stood four feet from the curb as if they were ready for action, muzzels down, finger to the side of the weapon.

It was an amazingly surreal experience. The Times Square that I once loved to visit has gone. No more adult book stores, no more movie houses, all Disney/Starbucks/ and advertising. I think I like the old sleazy Times Square much better.

    God I love the City.

I went to a Manhattan Chapter Studebaker show in 1999 or 2000.

There is another landmark that is gone.
