View Full Version : Column shift linkage?

I got the 50 Champion fired up. Previous owner mentioned a problem with the clutch... turns out it's the column shifter. The small"gearbox?" where the column shift shaft goes in, is slipping inside, the levers won't shift, is this a shear pin? or did something break inside?

I have a manual on the way.... 4 weeks delivery. is there an exploded drawing of this part avalable?

TIA

Bob, there's two "forks" inside that box. Each one's connected to a lever. The shaft that comes down from the shifter handle has a cog on the bottom. That cog engages the lower or upper fork, depending on whether the shifter shaft is pulled upwards (for the 2-3 gears) or downwards (for the 1st-Rev gears). The box is soft metal and after the grease dried up, the moving parts started to wear into the soft metal and created enough slop so that that cog could get out of it's assigned area of travel. OR, someone forced things enough to break one of the forks.
It's a pretty simple unit, all in all.:)

slightly embarassed.....

popped the cap off the column shift box, everything in there is shiny, spotless, grease is still clean, fork edges are all sharp... unhooked shift linkage, lined things up...... hmmmm, still not right....
played with shift levers at transmission.... works ok....

hmmmmm..... let's swap linkage rods and see what happens.....

golly gee whizz.... everything works perfectly....

previous owner had somehow swapped linkage rods..... doh!

new problem! I have the car running reasonable well, I want to back it out of the shop and try things out.......

..... and there are two truck loads of firewood piled in front of the garage waiting for someone to come along and split..... sigh!!!!!

Bob, I'm sorry, but I can't help you with the wood. I swore off firewood and the fireplace about 8 years ago. Too much trouble for our temperate climate.[:I]

Good deal on the shifters tho! :D

I do like the simple fix where all the parts are readily at hand.
