  • 64 GT Hawk center grill

I have owned this Hawk for about 20 years and I can't remember but the center grill,{The grid part} is copper looking. Was it ever bright chrome and the chrome just wore off or is it supposed to dark like that?

Buck: the horizontal parts were chrome and the vertical parts were painted over flat black. Good Luck.

Your chrome has evaporated and you are seeing the copper underplate. By that time, Stude was broke and everything in and on the 64 cars which was new was junk. The center grille and shell, the side grilles, the upholstery, the carpet were all the cheapest stuff anyone would sell them. Having restored several cars from the early '50s throught the '64, the decline of quality is very obvious. The chrome parts on the early '50s cars was several orders of magnitude better. Studebaker of the early 50s would never have put thin tin pieces of junk on their top line car like the three grilles of the '64 GT Hawk. Compare them to the three pieces on a '50 or '51 Land Cruiser.

      thnx, jv.
