View Full Version : 1957 Provincial wagon in MN

Here's a link to a very reasonably priced Provincial ($2900). I saw this car yesterday took a couple photos, but the ones on the site look better. I suppose the car runs, but I did not see it run. There is no headliner in it and soundproofing panels (?) are hanging down some. It looks very original. They call it a Commander wagon, but it is a Provincial. Actually, it's probably a good deal. If I had more room and more money maybe I'd go for it, but you know how it is.

All I can say at this point is:

"Interesting, VERY VERY INTERESTING!!!" ;)

It does indeed look like a nice ride, and I know some folks that'll back me up on that~ here they come now...

I wish it gave more information about the car. She sure is a beauty. It's a Commander, because of the motor. The trim and interior package are a Provincial, I think? It's kind of like my Commander/Parkview. Commander motor, Parkview wagon.

I imagine it was or is owned now by a member of the club. There are two Studebaker Drivers Club decals on the tailgate window. Probably the original front seat upholstery just got too mangled and that's why it has that off color front seat cover. It has an extra gauge under the dash to left of the steering wheel, but I didn't notice what it was for. I remember the motor has the optional oil filter setup on it.

[:o)]Ron, how do you know it's a Commader motor? I didn't see any mention of the motor. And what would the difference in engines be anyway?[:o)]

I sent an e-mail to them inquiring to the condition of the motor, etc. Here's their response:

Hi Ronald, the car runs out good. I have not seen anyproblem with the
brakes. There are some little bubbling in the paint. Feel free to give me
a call here too at 952 446-1950 ext 3

Thanks Nate

Steve, the originating post here called it a Commander (the engine), which is the script on the right and left front fenders forward of the wheel-well. I'm pretty sure, Commander or President refers to the engine. On my wagon, Parkview is in script on the tailgate, while Commander is on the front fender. This car looks to be the same. The pictures are so small, though, it makes it hard to tell.

Guys; this seller wrongly calls this thing a Commander (which it technically actually is) Studebaker did the same as Ford and GM did, they had different names for their wagons than the same trim level of sedan. Ford=Ranch Wagon, Country Sedan, Country Squire etc. Chev=Yeoman, Nomad, Brookwood whatever.

So in 1957 the Silver Hawk copied wagon rear fender fin trim was used on everything but the Broadmoor,(like the sedans) it had the (President) Golden Hawk copy simulated fin.

But the Wagon trim levels and engines match the Sedans, but there are NO markings anywhere to indicate Comm. Pres. etc.

Pelham 2dr. 57G-D4= Champion 185
Parkview 2dr. 57B-D4= Commander 259 **
Provincial 4dr.57B-P4= Commander 259 **
Broadmoor 4dr.57H-P6= President 289

Studebaker built these the way they envisioned them selling the best, in other words they saw no need of a 6cyl. 4dr. wagon or a 289 2dr. wagon **so those were only built for rare reasons like Police, Taxi, special order, employee, export etc.

EXCEPT SCOTSMANS...THEY ARE IN A CLASS BY THEMSELF'S!! [:0]

The link to the photos in my first post will help explain the names, and how to identify them.

Did you make a list of the wagon-only sales literature for those years? I know they had separate station wagon brochures in '56&7. and the '58's got an individual two sided color sheet for each body style, which amounts to 3 separate wagon sheets for that year counting Packard. Not to mention, there are other harder-to-find Fleet brochures such as the Panel-Wagon.

Thanks again for those pictures, Dave. Yes, the blue and white Provincial does show the name on the front fenders. This seems to be the same with the '57 Parkview. My '56 Parkview, however, has Commander in that place and Parkview on the tailgate.

From Dave's Thumbnails in Coppermine on the '56 wagon:

quote:The Pelham (Champion) looks similar to this, but differs in front fender nameplate. 'Champion' on the Pelham, 'Commander' on the Parkview. On the tailgate they were identified with their own name- Pelham/Parkview. The tailgate nameplates are not the same ones used in '57, BTW...PhotoCredit to Craig P

Therefore I stand corrected by superior authority.

I'd show pictures except for Dave's won't display. I tried.

That's how they did it in '56, and why some of the factory photos you see of the '57 wagons show 'Commander' on the front fender. When the 'production' cars rolled out they used the wagon's model name instead. Mine is body number 30...

What I meant by the comment on the nameplates ('56 to '57) is that they DO NOT interchange- the part numbers are different, and they are NOT the same. Someday when I can get mine next to yours you'll see what I mean. ;)
