  • Drove a 56J

I just got back from driving Curtis French's 56 Golden Hawk,
3 speed OD with 3:73 rear gears. Talk about a fun car!
And Curtis isn't afraid to actually DRIVE the wheels
off his cars! He MADE me do 80 MPH. I didn't want to,
being I'd never driven the car before, but I did, and
it was a blast!!! Then he drove me around in his 1967
Dodge Charger with factory 426 Hemi. He wanted me to
drive it, but I don't trust myself as of yet. The
56J is my favorite of all his cars. I'll get me one,
    someday...

I hope he has that hood tied down!![:0]

Last summer at the 2005 North Central Zone Meet in Moose Jaw, one of the members MADE me drive his OD equipped 27,000 mile '47 Champion to 85 mph down the Trans-Canada. I'm now convinced a Champion can go that fast without complaining!

          Matt,
That sounds like good, clean outdoor fun, with the wind in your face.
It has been a long time, but I still remember my first time driving a Stude. It was an almost new 52 coupe that my girlfriend's father bought her for her 15th birthday. I actually took my drivers test in that Stude when I reached 15 about 4 months later (I liked older women...with a car... then). It was just a 6 cyl. with 3 on the tree, and didn't pack the punch of a 56J, but it was better and newer than any thing I had for several years. My first car was a 48 Plymouth Ex-taxi with many miles on it and a brush Black paint job to cover the Yellow, that I paid $35 for.

          Have fun,

Actually, while I was driving, Mr. Curtis mashed my foot down with his as I was going into 2nd gear. He didn't let off til the top of 2nd... (No, I'm not complaing...)

We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

                G. K. Chesterton: This triangle of truisms, of father, mother, and child, cannot be destroyed; it can only destroy those civilizations which disregard it.

They do look good in black, don't they?

I remember driving the green/white 56J that JP had for a while... the one that went to Belgium... after that, I stepped up the intensity of the search for a 3/OD setup for my own 56J

I do remember that the engine sounded real good through glasspacks when merging onto the freeway in 2nd gear too <G> but correct me if I'm mistaken, but shouldn't a 56J have a 3.92 rear end?

I'm not sure what the original gear ratio was. This car has 3:73. It's perdy good off the line...

Well, Matthew, actually, it does have 3.92 gears, and will max out at about 60 in direct second. Reckon the speedo numbers got a little blurry from excitement, hmmm?

Yeah, I was REALLY concerned about how fast I was going. You mean you could actually tell I was excited? Hmmm, George said he thought it had 3:73. Nate gets the prize for this one.

That sure is a pretty Hawk. The one's I remember had 2-tone paint jobs. Mathew (or Mr. Curtis), could you post a higher resolution picture of the car. I sure would like a better look at it. Thanks.

This isn't Roy Hasting's old car, is it? I seem to remember him having one with a stick. Now that I think about it~ didn't he put a 4-speed in it somehow? He's in Jacksonville...
