A mechanic looking over portions of my 53 commander noticed the steering column is close to the manifold. Should there be any type of heat shield or has this not been a problem?

It's not been a problem. Are all the motor mounts in good shape? They can sag and cause the manifold to be closer than it should be.:(

Food for thought....if the engine has had the front motor mounts replaced before, or the engine has been lifted up off of the frame pads, it could have been re-installed in the wrong holes on the frame pads.
On the LH drive cars the mount studs go in the RIGHT side holes on the frame pads causing the engine to have more clearance from the steering box. On RH drive cars the studs go in the two LEFT side holes for the same reason. The shop manual will show pictures of this in case I have totaly confused anyone.:) Hope this may help, I've seen this condition several times before.

Also, (since Dan made me think about it) if your car's an automatic, there's a thick spacer under the left rear mount. Between the mount and the crossmember it sets on. Left side only. The left rear mount has a longer stud to accomodate this as well.
If it's a stick shift car - never mind![:I]
