I have a 1950 Studebaker champion, with the 169 inline six. I need a number one piston and rod. Is it better to have the cranshaft reworked or replaced? The nuts came off the rod and hit the crankshaft causing scoring.

You're gonna have to have that Crank fixed either way. You might well find a good used one or even an NOS one pretty cheap. Figure around a $100+ to have yours fixed. If it's DEEPLY scored, they can build it back up and then turn it back to spec.
As far as the parts go, once you get the engine torn down and see if it had/has oversize pistons - and whether or not there was any damage done to the cylinder bore - you can get whatever parts you need from SASCO or SI or Fairborn Studebaker (937) 878-1576 ;)
Don't forget a gasket set as well!:D And time to check that fibre timing gear while you're at it.[^]

If you are able to get by without having to bore the engine, I have a stock piston you can have, a little postage and it's yours. You can reach me at 54studebaker@cox.net I reused my old rods when I rebuilt my 169...
