View Full Version : Has anyone weighed a Studebaker Avanti frame?

Just went out and weighed the stainless steel Avanti frame. It is 248# with the body mounts and front crossmember.

Has anyone weighed a bare Studebaker Avanti frame with no suspension or components for comparison?

Also, does anyone have the weight of the Avanti Dana 44 complete with drums, and leaf springs, less tires and wheels?

Would like to compare this weight to an independent axle assembly.

The thing that concerns me about a lighter frame, is that you will in
effect be throwing off the center of gravity, actually raising it. I
will be interested to see how well this performs over a stock setup
in similar mechanical condition. Someone on the Racing Studebaker
forum was talking about getting the X-member made out of high strength
aluminum, and reducing it from the ~175 pounds, to a 1/4 of that. But
the X-member is the lowest point on the frame, and lower then the
center of the wheels. The fiberglass body of the Avanti is actually
pretty heavy, and by raising the center of gravity could adversely
effect the handling - in theory. I applaud your effort, just a couple
thoughts that came to mind. I think that the heavy X-member might be
balancing the weight of the built in roll bar/fiberglass body. At 248#
it sounds like your frame is CONSIDERABLY lighter, if the 175 pounds I
have seen for JUST the x-member is true!

The weight of just the axle was posted here, or Racing Studebakers,
might try a search. The comparison wont mean too much, since you are
reducing the unsprung weight by using an IRS.

We just went out and weighed an original Avanti frame with two points of reference(pivots). We came up with a total of 344.5# compared with the 248# of the new stainless steel frame thus far. It still has some 2x3 tubing needing to be grafted to the front end.

We think that even though that this is substantially less than the original, we are probably more rigid due to a better structure material and the fact that the X-member had no material removed for the exhaust or the driveshaft.
