View Full Version : Oil in Rad.coolant

Noticed my heat guage was acting wonkey;I thought thermostat so started to replace it.Removed therm.cover & it was full of thick greasy biege sludge, looked further & rad was full of the slime also.
The car(63 GT) has a new rad.& block flushed out 3yrs.ago.It does not seem to overheat & no bubbles in rad.fluid after I flushed it & ran to operating temp. The oil appears clear with no polutants & is not going down any worse than usual & runs at 160f.Where could this stuff be getting into the coolant,I always thought it was the other way round (water or gas in oil)As Gilda Radner used to say "It's always something"--Kevin

Is there a trans. cooler in the radiator? If so, could this be the problem?

Kevin,
I remember asking a similar question here, so here is the thread (I found it by doing a search for the terms, "oil coolant" in the subject line - check out the forum's search feature, it's very powerful).

So Paul, what did it turn out to be with your truck?

The auto trans. in my 63 GT is air cooled with no lines going to the rad.A couple of local stude-sperts thought it could be a head gasket either near the oil return hole or near where the oil is pumped up under pressure for the rocker arms.As I said it does not overheat & there are no bubbles in the rad when it's running.Any more thoughts?

Clark,
I'm almost embarrassed to admit I haven't gotten around to looking into it yet. But soon...

And I envy you owning a '63 Lark. That was our family car when I was a kid. I hope to have one like it again one day.

My flathead six problem seems like yours. No water in the oil, and it doesn't overheat. I really think Gordon (gordr) is onto the right idea (see the other thread linked to, in one of my messages above) about checking the cooling system pressure. I recently got an older pressure tester on eBay. The first thing I used it for was to find out my radiator cap couldn't hold pressure, so I bought a new one from a Stude parts vendor.

When I finally get my wiring redone, I'll put the pressure tester on the radiator and find out if the pressure keeps rising as the engine is running.

The oil enters the coolant because the oil pressure is higher than the coolant pressure (at least lets HOPE so:(). Just because the oil is in the coolant dosen.t nessessarily mean an large increase of coolant pressure. When a head gasket is open to the combustion chamber THEN is when you see extreemly high coolant pressures, ie, steaming, large over flow amounts, and possible hose failure [xx(]. The test for combustion gasses is simple... stop by a shop that has an exhaust gas analyzer, open the rad. cap (SAFELY!), hold the "sniffer" over the open neck, watch the readings on the analyzer. As for the oil, I would strart with head gaskets.

Hey Dillocrafter, you planning on going to So. Bend in 07? I might drive up my 63 Daytona, depending on how it's doing then. If I do, I'll let you take it around for a spin, for old times sake. [8D] It's a six banger with auto trans, and it going to be straight red, no candy apple or metallic. Real close to the one that JDP sold a few years ago. It was an R2 car I believe... The interior will be red and the seats will have the white insterts. To kinda hop it up, I've found a custom made split manifold which allows for dual exhaust.:D BTW, does anyone know of a 2 barrel that will fit on the stock manifold to allow for a little more power? The original carb is known to not give good satisfaction... [V]

BTW, JP, you wouldn't to just so happen to have the paint # for that car, would you?

Matthew, that should be Regal Red I believe. Blaze Red was used in '62 and is a little more orange.

I'd rather have the one without the Orange tint. My car is orange enough as it is. :D And dull, very dull...

Hey Matt,

I hope I can go to a national meet by '07, especially if it's in South Bend. And I want to drive the Red-Headed Amazon there, if can. If you repaint your Lark to look like the red one above, it will be worth the price of admission just to go and see it!

It'll look almost identical to that one above, only with red seats with white inserts. And thanks, it makes one feel good that there car is appreciated by others as well. DRIVE that truck! Can't wait to see it.

mb if you want a red car .get porche red.its just red

yeah, what stude freak said. If all you're looking for is a red that doesn't tend to orange, and you're not concerned with originality, get some Porsche Guards Red, it's the definitive "arrest me red" color :)

but if you're not going original, why not do something a little different like a copper-orange metallic or... something, use your imagination...

My uncle's 79 Dodge Lil' Red Express is Porsche Red, but it's so faded out now that I cna really tell what it's supposed to look like. I;ve been considering that though.
No metallic for me, I just want a RED car. (Mine's not that fast, it's a 6 banger with auto trans)
