View Full Version : V8 block water jacket drain plugs

Time to replace the antifreeze. Whats the simplest way (correct size socket and extensions) to get those two four-sided water jacket drain plugs out of the block? Six point sockets? From above or below?If they are not removed, then only half the coolant drains out thru the radiator. Once upon a time I used to know how to do this.

Open end wrench (1/2 in.?) and a little bit of luck, then channel-lock, then vise grips or plumbers wrench, then drill them out. I think you have to take the starter off to get at the drivers side.

8 point 1/2" drive socket and an inpact wrench. They just come right out.

Be prepared to have next to nothing pour out when you remove them. All the "crud" settles to that part of the cooling system over time and this can even cause a hot spot back there.[}:)]

Alan is correct. Also be prepared to make a big mess[xx(]. This stuff is as nasty as the worst creek mud you've ever seen. What ever it gets on, it won't come off of or out of.. wear "throw-away" clothing or a rain suit[xx(]. Once the plugs are out, you'll need a coat hanger, straighten it out and push it in the plug hole, wiggle it around. Watch out... more creek mud. I have a old refrigerator ice-maker water supply line with a hose type connector and a 2ft length of 3/16 copper tubing. With a right angle bend in the end, you can feed it in the hole, turn the water supply on and as before... more creek mud. After you feel that it is pretty clean, you may need a 3/8 pipe tap to "chase" the threads for the new pipe plugs. (use brass, they won't corode and will come out easy next time). Now is the time for a close inspection of those "freeze plugs". If any are leaking, replace them ALL. You don't want to be stranded on the side of the road when the ONE you DIDN'T replace desides to let go. You can use the brass knock in replacements, or the COPPER ones with the nut in the center. They're made by Dorman Co. Hope this helps:)
