  • What does "C&K" mean?

    I keep seeing the abbreviation "C&K models" in lit and parts listings. What does that stand for?

    (Dumb newbie question )

    Bourke designed body style -- the sleek 53 model that was changed a few times until the 64 GT (last year). The C stands for the Coupe style (has post that runs up rear of door and front of rear vent window). The K is for the hardtop model that doesn't have the post. All GT models were K's.

          keep in mind that there was also the "J" hardtop, which was the Lark-based hardtop, which is why people find it more convenient to use body codes rather than just say "hardtop."

          Was the '58 hardtop also a "J" body code?

            I have a '58 hardtop and I was told that the 'J' frame was unique to that year's hardtop. If anyone else has info on the '58 hardtop I'd be glad to hear it.

              so another dumb question - it is Couple and Hartop - so why didn't they use C&H instead of C&K ?

                Because these codes are to identify cars and parts in the Studebaker Chassis and Body Parts Catalogs, not to be an ancronynm for the "Name"! And they go Alpha-numercally up, as developed!
                Why did General Motors use "C" for Chev./GMC Trucks and "K" for Blazer/Jimmy?

                    Keep in mind that Studebaker had been making cars since 1902 and tended to use the same body symbols as time went on (why reinvent the wheel). Here are some of the body symbols from a 1923 to 1925 Parts Book:

                    C = Coupe (three or four passenger)
                    K = Coupe (five passenger)
                    W = Sedan
                    F = Coach

                    The "J" body is listed in 1928 as a sport roadster.

                    Other than the "J" body these are basically the same body symbols as used in 1953 when the modern "coupe" and "hardtop" models were introduced.
