58 Hardtop, what is it actually worth?

There is a copper, or brown 58 Commander hardtop on ebay right now, it looks to be in good condition, I was wondering what everyone here feels that a car like that is actually worth. I don't want to use the high bid on ebay as a guide, I have found that high bids on ebay are often flukes, and you could sell the exact same thing twice and get totally differen't high bids. What I am looking for is a price that one like that should go for on the open market. And if you can't come up with an exact ammount, that's OK just looking for some guidlines and also anyone who has actually witnessed some prices on these in this condition. thanks

While that seems to be a particularly nice example, the demand for the '58 is only within this club and at that not a well-regarded model year even in the general membership.
I would opine that at $10K it is at the realistic limit, that the buyer better like the car alot and enjoy it, that it might be difficult to see his money investment returned in the future.
But driving such a unique and rare model is the real return on investment, the dollars notwithstanding.

If you go to www.nada.com click on consumer then, classic cars, you'll get an idea of what its approx. worth is. For this model it shows 4400 for a low end, 9300 for middle of the road & 14500 for a high end price. The copper one on Ebay is probably around the ballpark for the price. Its mostly restored so, thats half the battle won. If I had the room, I wouldn't mind putting a bid on it myself.

I sold a nice 58 Commander HT on ebay for 13K last year, so 15K or so, seems high market right now.

BTW, here's a 58 President HT that just sold on ebay.
If anyone sold a car at this level on the open market,
they are tossing money out the window IMHO.
Of course I try to find cars on the open market
myself. Now and then, you find the guy that
paid 6K for his Studebaker 10 years ago, and
just wants to break even.

Yes, that what I'm saying, even ebay is not the best venue for the really exceptional car/truck. i.e. do you think Ed Ellis would have recieved 50K for his 4 wheel drive Studebaker truck in TW, or even ebay ? He choose the Barette Jackson auction to get that kind of money. If it was my choice, I think the 16,000 mile Avanti would have gone to Barette to get more money for the widow. BTW, I was accussed of driving down Avanti values on the Studebaker News group with that listing, and that's a first.

While I was on a trip to Hawaii several weeks ago, my wife invested in a new computer. My picture files were not transferred, but I do have a copy at my office. It has a little over 5600 miles and is in good shape.

Even though these 1958 hardtops are rarer than hen's teeth the old adage of "what was popular then will be popular now" still holds and popularity = big bucks. For a committed Studebaker collector like most of us are though, the 1958 hardtop like the Champion now on eBay represents a real up and coming car in SDC circles and I would think that for the price of a mid-line KIA, $15,000 for something this nice is not totally out of line.

As for eBay and Studebakers, right now it's the only game in town if you want maximum exposure. Studes do okay at Barrett-Jackson but again, that depends on the model AND if you can afford the steep commission and listing prices they charge. Turning Wheels is fine if you want to wait 2+ months to sell your car, and at that you are preaching strictly to the choir. I've said this before but in certain areas of the country certain styles of Studebakers are all but impossible to sell. Nobody in my local club, for example, is drooling over a four door, 6 cylinder 3-on-the-tree anything that Studebaker put out. eBay's large national and international exposure helps move cars like these and if you'll pardon me for saying it, helping drive the prices of Studebaker products up AND introducing them to the folks that will be buying them from us in our dotage!

If I had the money and storage I'd sure buy that 1958 Champion hardtop. Sure beats the heck out of a new KIA!

Hmmm... A Champion Hardtop WOULD be a rare one! All the info I've read indicates only Commander & President hardtops were built.[}]

I would not bid that amount on a car without looking it over. That being said, I may buy it so that I can use the Headlight Bezels on the Packebaker, then put the car back on EBAY with my pitted old bezels, and make a tidy sum to boot.
