Popped the head gasket on my OHV6, and am close to ready to install the new one. There's a bit of a nick in the block deck where the hole occurred between #3 and #4, but since it was low on compression anyway, I'm going to button her up so I can drive her until I get theBlack Bart Special (185 OHV 6) built.

I haven't done a head gasket in 20 years or so, and have forgotten...What's the best sealant to use ( Or not use) with a head gasket?

Ron, I've known guys who've used JB Weld on head decks with minor dings and had good results.

I still have some permatex copper coat in a brush-on can that's not all dried up. That's what I was thinking,and you've copnfirmed it as OK..sort-of. Brush it on the gasket. So do I let it set up, or put it on "wet"?

:) RON: OK to use old Copper-Coat, but be sure you mix it up thoroughly! The ball rolling around isn't sufficient if you haven't used it for awhile. Take out the little dauber and mix it up with a screwdriver. ;) BP

Well, just to be different <G>, I use KW CopperCoat, basically the same thing as Permatex.

(Back in the 'old days' [the 'early '70s, I'm not THAT old<G>], we used aluminum spray paint, because it was cheaper. That was back when aluminum spray paint actually had aluminum in it. Nowdays, don't do this, the aluminum paint is just aluminum color.)

Do like JP said....let it tack up some before installing. I usually spray several thin coats on both sides of the gasket, let it tack up, and then install/torque.

There's a ball in there? It sure is stuck good!

All is back together, and she;s running as good as she ever could..given that the *best* cylinder has 95 psi compression!

As usual I disagree, we tried that coppercoat stuff years ago when we
built my brothers engine, & blew two headgaskets one after the other.
Prior to that we had used an old engine builder trick of smearing some
axle grease on the block, and then on the top of the gasket. This also
makes cleanup MUCH easier when you DO have to take the head off again.
Apparently the theory is that the grease will ooze into the combustion
chambers and then once the engine fires, it creates a carbon ring at
the gasket. The coppercoat stuff tends to be difficult to get an even
coat and can cause leak paths. Never had an engine blow a head gasket
with the grease trick, and my Hawks engine was and average of 182 psi
on a cold compression test (about 9.3 compression). Redid my brothers
engine with the grease, & that was over 10 years ago including a trip
across country towing a trailer with 3:73 gears.;)
