I am considering replacing the 3.73 gear set in my 1964 R-2. How many different ratio's were available as stock items and what would the best combination be for highway speeds. I have an extra set of 3.3 (43 ring & 13 pinion) gears that came with the car. Any suggestions?. Floyd

Auto or 4 speed? If 4 speed close or wide ratio?

The best for highway speeds ONLY would be as low numberically as you can get...maybe 2.90's or so. The problem with that is you wouldn't have a good time getting the car moving with a 4 speed and it would feel pretty doggy up to 40MPH or so even with the auto.

The 3.31's you have would be a pretty good compromise for an auto.

I wouldn't go below 3.73's with a close ratio 4 speed (2.20 low) or below 3.54 with a wide ratio box (2.54 low).

Dick: Thank you for your reply, my R-2 has an automatic transmission. I would'nt want the car to be a complete dog in town so I will run the 3.31 ratio past my mechanic. Floyd

My Avanti had the 3:73s in it also when I got it, it was a "peg-leg"
and revved too high on the freeway. I swapped axles with my Hawk when
I totalled the Hawk, it had a 3:31 twin traction axle. Even with the
T-86 3 speed stick, the car is much more well behaved, and still has
enough pick-um-up to beat a new Chevy Colorado after I gave him a head
start off the line.;) Its 'only' an R1.[:I]
