Starting to make plans for the resurrection of the wagon...[8D]

First question: Where's the best place to get a manual? I know there are several sources; looking for your recommendation(s)...

I'd prefer a manual on CD... love printing out pertinent pages and just tossing them when they get dirty...

I'll be pestering you all here quite a bit as I work on this car...

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Those CD manuals all come from the same source. I gotta say tho, the reprint manuals have bad enough resolution to the factory photos used thru out the manuals. I can't imagine how crappy the resolution would be thanks to a printer's rendition.

I try to buy ORIGINAL manuals when I can. And even with them being 50+ years old, the grease of use thru the years has never made them unuseable or repugnant.[^] To each their own of course.

    Miscreant at large.

Thank you sir... I'll keep an eye open on ebay for an original...

In the meantime, who is that one source for a CD?

I have purchased several manuals on CD from SI, although I believe Classic manuals is the source. I recall that SI has a good price on these CD's.
        Here,

I hope things go well on the Provincial resurrection, keep us posted.

Robert A., I thought that you resided in the area of one of the largest auto literature dealers in the World, Walter Miller in Syracuse. You might try him. If he is a little more than some others, you might more than make up the difference in the saved shipping.

I'm excited about getting it home tomorrow; I'm taking lots of pics, starting with where she's sitting now, and when she first sees daylight... I plan to share the pics as I go along...

I love the idea of bringing a neglected, forgotten old car back to it's former glory...[^]

                    Got her home!

Here's the barn she was in [img]http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/6/web/2358000-2358999/2358680_2_full.jpg[img]

After pressure washing the body and engine, threw a battery in and a little gas in the carb and she fired right up!! Sounds great, trans. works well also!!

Overall, VERY solid and straight- a great find!!

                    TBC....

P.S. The tag inside the door (see pic) says: 8469058... is this the VIN, and if so, can someone decode it for me? Also, how many models of wagons were made in 57, and where does this rank?

                    Thanks!!

Glad to see that car out of the barn~ looks like you found a good car to start with!
                      [^]
To answer your question- 8469058... is the VIN. Nothing to 'decode' there. The numbers that matter (sorta) are on the plate under the hood~ passenger side firewall. It ought to read '57B-P4' with a number under that. These numbers will tell you that you have a '57 Commander-based (259) 4 door wagon. The number under the others will tell you the 'body number'. There were a total of 3995 Provincial wagons built in 1957. Of those 269 were exported, plus 48 that went to Canada. What you ought to do is get the 'production order' from the Studebaker Nat'l Museum. It'll tell you how your car left the factory, option-wise and what-not. It'll also tell you the serial number of the original motor!

Let us know what the body number is, I'm sure there's someone out there who'd be curious to know- Russtude has two of those wagons. I have a 2 door version of yours, plus a couple of sedans- my Dad has a "Broadmoor"- the President version of the 4 door wagon.

Thanks, StudeDave! Of course I want to learn all I can about the car; your help is appreciated!

How many models of wagons were made in 57? I know about the Scotsman, Provincial, and Broadmoor; were there others?

Also, is there a good source online for pics of these? I'd love to see any pics I could!

                        How 'bout yours?

There were 5 Studebaker wagon models in '57. The breakdown goes something like this-

Scotsman- bargin basement 2 door, 6 cylinder
                          Pelham- Champion-based 2 door, 6 cylinder
                          Parkview- Commander-based 2 door, 259 powered
                          Provincial- Commander-based 4 door, 259 powered
                          Broadmoor- President-based 4 door, 289 powered

There were some that were special ordered with other motors in them~ You could get the 289 in a Scotsman for example! Get ahold of the August 1993 Turning Wheels. There's a real nice article that covers 1957. I can't seem to find it right now, but there was also a three issue 'series' in TW that covered wagons. Maybe five years ago... ?

I forgot to mention that my Dad also has a Pelham (besides the others I already mentioned!) Here is a link to my cars and some other people's as well...

Suggestion - don't run the engine around too much without checking the valve lash.
Since they are mechanical and don't adjust themselves. Don't trust thAt the last owner had them right. A burned exhaust valve can happen fairly quickly.

                            Have fun with it.
