Shop Manual says remove engine to replace rod bearings? Anybody know any short-cuts? Thanks! Champ:(

Yes, pull the engine. It's quicker than what you'd have to do trying to drop the pan in the car. You can pull a flathead six in about 2 hours tops.

Maybe I am missing something. couldn't you undo the engine mounts, jack the engine up and shove blocks of wood under them, then drop the pan and roll new shells in in the car?

BTDT... but not in a Studebaker...

N8 not enough room to do that. BTW, make sure it's a rod knock, piston slap is not unusual on a Champion.

Would piston slap be caused by a worn wrist-pin? I seem to remember that they would last a long time if driven normaly? The engine was rebuit about 4,000 miles ago by previous owner. Thanks Champ

Describe the nature of the knock. Only hot, cold, both? Under load - no load, acceleration - deceleration. Dull thud, sharp clack?[:I]

Oh - and what's the oil pressure like?

I think the 48 is like my 47 Champ, the front suspension is the transverse spring which sort of makes the pan real hard to remove in the car. It is easier to pull the engine than it is to pull that spring

Traverse spring AND a front sump pan, pull the engine.

No noise till it warms up. Noise starts at 12 to 15 mph. in 1st gear, 20 to 25 mph in 2nd gear, 42 to 45 mph 3rd gear and a little over 55mph in o.d. Under load yes steady speed yes acceleration yes deceleration no noise. More like a rattle than a dull thud or sharp clack. oil pressure is over 40 cold, a little over 30 at highway speed, and over 20 at idle. Thanks again Champ

Good news! The noise in my engine was the water pump! Also found a bad front motor mount. I think the bad mount was causing the noise to resonate and make the noise sound different than what it was. Champ[8D]
