Bob,
If that's the same tube you pour the oil into, I may have one. Let me scrounge around, I'll git back to ya':)

You would need a really steady hand to pour your oil in through the dipstick tube. Or a VERY tiny funnel...[:p]:D

(I know, I shouldn't have said anything, but I couldn't resist. Sorry. [:I])

Unlike the earlier Champions that had their dipstick incorporated into the oil filler cap, from '50-on, the dipstick was a part by itself and fit into it's own little tube that sticks up just ahead of the end of the starter. This is on cars. Trucks appearantly persisted with the filler cap/dipstick thru the '54 models.

Yes, I need the itty-bitty tube that accomodates the dipstick alone. I've had a number of these thru the years but sold my last one to someone who posts here. That was a couple of years ago. Now that I'm trying to breathe life into this '54 Starliner, I need a tube for myself.[V]

If one off a Lark OHV six would fit, I should have one. Might take some looking. My parts filing system looks a bit like yours.:D

These tubes were retained by a spring wire device that hooked under the bearing projection on the face of the starter, IIRC.

Got that![}:)]

Gord, I don't know. I say that because the parts book, while showing the same dipstick used from '59 thru '64 sixes, shows different tubes used as opposed to the one's used on this '54. WHAT the difference is, I don't know.
The diagram in the 0115 section of the chassis book shows a drawing of stick & tube and it clearly shows threads on the bottom of the tube. I know that this 54 engine has no threads for the tube. The only thing that holds it besides a snug fit is the little spring-wire you made reference to. and it's listed for use thru '64 as well. In fact, there's different ones for Autolite vs Delco starters.

I know there's several nice, early Champions represented thru forum attendees here. Maybe someone would be nice enough to measure the lenght of their dipstick tube - from the lip of the engine block to the top of the tube. I can make one easy enough if I know that measurement.:D

Biggs, I just pulled one from a '52 spare engine in my barn. It's held in by the little J-clip just like the later ones. No sign of threads.

I could measure the length easily enough, but I'm headed into Calgary right now. But I could check it tomorrow morning and get it in the mail before 1:00 P.M. Postage on the tube alone ought to be cheap.

I'll check into the forum later tonight.

Mr. Biggs, I just went to the garage and measured the dipstick tube on my '54 Champion Hardtop (original engine). From the surface of the block to the top of the tube is 4 and 3/4 inches tall.

At least I THINK the ruler was touching the block, as my car is no trailer queen and there is more than a little grime accumulated there. :(

Maybe you'll get some other responses and see if they agree.

Bob,
Oh well, that obviously shows how close attention I've paid.[:0] I thought that change was later on. I' pretty sure I don't have that one. If I do run across on, I'll let you know.

Thanks for the responses all. Gord, I'll see if I've got a piece of tubing around here that I could fudge one from, given 15G's measurements. If I deem it's too much trouble, I may take you up on that one you've found.;)

Klif, thanks. Let's see if Stephen comes thru. Otherwise I'd happily pay shipping. Would like to get the little keeper wire (clip?) that holds it in place but it's not as important as the tube to me.

Biggs,

What about the funny little wire clip that clips under the 'protrusion' on the front of the starter motor and applies downward pressure to hold the dip stick tube down in its hole? Do you have that? That is the thing I always seem to find missing on a six.

I guess mechanics pull the starter, and then cannot figure out what the heck that silly thing is for!<G>
