You could send your carb to Dave Thibeault 13 Nick Lane Maynard MA. 01754 (978)897-3158, who specializes in R series carb rebuilds. I sent him my R2 carb for redu! $275 and comes back in show condition ready to install.

I could not get my R2 to idle at first. I too had the R2 + cam. A buddy on the News group had ran into the same problem and saved the day. The engine was not pulling enough vacuum at idle to keep the metering rods down on the lowest step. swapped to lighter springs and she smoothed right out.

John, thanks for the response. This very well could be the issue as the carb that is on there now is the standard 289 4 barrel. When/if I ever get the correct carb I will have to make sure it will accomodate that extremely low manifold vacuum.
        Thanks,
        Tim

Dan, thanks for this suggestion. I have already explored this option.

Buy a Carter "strip kit" from Summit Racing. You'll get the springs, rods and jets.

John, Carter doesn't sell anything carb related anymore... what he needs is some Edelbrock parts intended for the "Performer" series of carburetors. Which most of us still refer to as "AFBs" because that's what they really are.

I posted on the newsgroup a while back a link to a "tuning guide" on Edelbrock's web site, that should supply the part numbers for the springs in various stiffnesses and will also provide a reference for the new Edelbrock numbering system for the rods and jets. If you do have an old Carter "strip kit" I have a similar document bookmarked that I believe Jeff R. found. (ain't the WWW great?)

                OK, Edelbrock strip kit then.
