View Full Version : Intake valve Oil deposit

I have just finished rebuilding a couple of engines.
I borrowed a friend's valve grinding equipment.
Before returning it I wanted to redo the valves on one remainig engine
that I have layin around.
It came out of a rusty 63 hawk.
It is a 289.

I was suprised to see that the valves and the heads seem to be almost new.
The valves not yet have an identation where it rides on the seat.
And again the head also shows no wear.

When I pull the vave and put my finger over the guide I hear a good loud pop - indicating good guides.
The cylinder wall has no ridge.
The walls are not scored - (no broken rings?)

However all the intake valve's backs have a very heavy black deposit idicatin oil usage.
All of the valve seals were in place, but hard.

I was not planning to rebuild this engine until next winter.
The only part that I can see that needs replacement are the valve seals.

Does anyone know of what other valve seal I can use than the stude?
Also any other suggestion prior to removing the pistons which I was only planning on doing next year.

Fairborn Studebaker sells stock-style valve seals made of a better material for longer life.
