  • 56 vin plate metal

I am in the process of getting my 56 wagon body dipped and the question has come up what type of metal is the vin plate made out of. They want me to remove it (break the welds) they think it is alum. I say it is spot welded on and therefore it is either ss or plan old steel. It is my call so anyone who knows what it is please help. I know the black paint(decal will be lost but I have new decals for that. Thank You

They are not that hard to pull. I'd take it off. Even if the tag survives the dip, there will be no protection for the bare metal under the tag. Once the car is painted, reattach, and if you spot weld it, touch up with paint as necessary. I'll guarantee that will be the first place to rust and bubble the new paint if it doesn't come off.
