  • 2R10-22-C2 W/ build date of 1949

My buddy is restoring a Stude 3/4 ton truck, a 2R10-22-C2.
He got a build sheet from the Stude Museum, and found out the final assembly date was 1-24-1949, and that the rear-end has a 5.57 to 1 ratio.

Are any other gear ratios available for this truck?
Or are there any other rear-end options available?

I restored a '54 Chebby 3/4 ton truck back in the early 1990's and took the old 4.56 out and bolted in a '69 3/4 ton Chebby rear end with a 3.54 to 1 ratio. With that rear end, it really cruised well on the Interstate--I could drive 65 mph all day long.

While my buddy would prefer to keep things 100% original, I don't think the idea of a 50 mph top speed is very appealing to him. Everything else on the truck will be original, but he just wants to be able to keep up with modern traffic.

Find a Studebaker overdrive transmission and end up with 3.90 in OD, maybe add a 4.56 rear for a better highway setup. I'd suggest converting to a 3 something Ford 9 inch rear, but the Champ six won't pull it.

Thanks JDP! Would 4.56 gears bolt into his existing rear-end?
I've not been under the truck, and I'm not even sure whether it is an open-drive shaft or an enclosed driveshaft.

And how difficult are 3-speed/OD tranny's to get?

It's easier to swap the entire rear from a parts truck if you can find one. Even a 4:11 or a 4:56 would be a pain without the OD though.

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure for what Stude 3-speed OD tranny's are selling for now?

And is the OD a bolt-on addition to the regular 3-speed?
Or is the 3-speed OD tranny a completely different animal?

It's a compleat transmission, around $100-$250 would be a ball park figure.

              BTW, I have a Dana 44 geared at 50/11 (4.54) from a 57 transtar sitting unused.

I'm Las Vegas, Nevada. Here a shot of it in the bed of Grandad's truck.

I havn't pulled the cover, and have no idea of the condition, I pulled it from my uncles truck (along with anything else I could manage), that had been sitting for 15 years, just before the wrecker came to scrap it

(The property had sold, and the new owners wanted the truck gone as a condition of the sale, and I had/have no space for it, and no one was intersted).

Sadly, I had to leave the V8 engine behind.

                  Paul.
