I have 3 Studes + 2 spare 289's. I talked with a Stude friend last night, he has 3 spare engines. Granted, some of these are best suited for parts, but I wonder how many extra engines are stashed out there in Studedom? Come to think of it I also have two spare trannys.

I have most of a spare 352 that I sure would like to see go to a good home. It is partially disassembled and missing the oil pump but supposedly was a good running engine when I bought it.

And, one rebuilt 289 short block in storage here in Oklahoma. The guy that is going to help me check it out has been sick, but we WILL get to it. [B)]

Glad I fronted the money on that one, or I'd be REALLY embarrassed, rather than just very embarrassed! [:I]

I can't believe how long it is taking me to get caught up after working the job with all of the overtime for a year. The place looked like an untamed jungle, and everything was all out of place, and everything needed maintenance. I have actually hired two hands to help me, partially because it just needed to be done, but mostly because I needed some brush cleared quickly that was too close to the buildings, given the current fire hazard. I think in two more days I will be caught up with the yard, shop, and shed. Maybe by then my buddy will feel up to looking at the engine. [8]

He can help me determine what the "needs" are, if any, and I kin make it purdy.

I have to admit, though, that in the back of my mind I kind of like the idea of having a Stude block available, in case one of the Brand X engines crater. Then, I consider the cost of heads, intake, this, that, the other, and shipping, and it gives me a headache. [xx(]

If any of you gentlemen have a 289(circa Nov-Dec/1963) and in reasonably close trim to a R1 and would care to help resurrect an Avanti back to her original glory(currently sporting a GM branded lump of iron) I would be interested in entering into a purchase contract at a price equivalent to condition/originality.

N8, if that's your 352, get it the hell out of my garage. I thought it went with the Golden Hawk I traded you for, and I can't give it away.:)

Good, let me know if anyone takes the 352 here. Maybe I'll put it on ebay with a $1.00 starting bid.:)

6 short blocks (please, don't ask me displacements) not ALL being treated kindly, mind you. 6 or 7 long blocks. From brand new rebuilt to froze solid. No 232s in the mix - unless you count the one in my 53 (I didn't count the engines IN the cars![xx(]) That would add up to another 5 V8s. Got a Champion 6 here too. Buildable core - was running when dumped here by a rodder.
OH - there's the one V8 I'm letting my buddy build for me. (BTW, my buddy builds as good (and frugal) a Stude engine as you could hope for and he needs the work. The challenge is getting the car/engine to his rather out of the way locale.[:I]

Spare engines?

One '40 champion six; one '52 Champion six, one '52? 2R5 Champion six that actually was a former Weasel engine, one spare Weasel engine. That's four six cylinder engines.

One '62 259, low miles on a "built" rebuild, one '63? 289 rebuildable core (will run), one '59 259 in a parts car that runs, one 289 I haven't even hauled home yet. One seized 259 that I think could be rebuilt, and a couple of V8s in pieces. Close to seven V8s.

And one McKinnon 283.

lets see...
I have a 259, a 170 six, and a really really poor condition 289.

I could use a couple core 232's though as I have two nos crate 232 to build up.

All of those engines are completely impractical, they would require expensive premium gasoline. what you need is to trade one of those for a nice standard 289 so you don't have to deal with all that. Fortunately I know a guy that happens to have just what you need.

I have in South africa approximately 10 motors in various trim, mostly they are 62/63 289 or 259 motors with the Oil filter on the side of the block, I also have quite a few of the older engines in 259 and 289 as well as about 4 or 5 of the 3spd overdrive trannys with the Hurst/Fulray style shifters all in perfect reconditioned state.

To run properly on todays pump fuel (read urine)R-1 mills have to be de-tuned..oem compression is just too high...and I doubt many of "us" live just down the block from Union 76, or Sunoco Cam 2 stations where 110 leaded juice can be obtained. Soon these cars will become museum pieces, as the quality of the fuel and dictates from the "beltway" all but wipe out the hobby we all love and "live for".

HNCadet:

John and Kathy Rodhouse (have a table at York) always seem to have rare spare parts..they recently completed their 57 Golden Hawk to a 100 point car....the engine in the Hawk was obtained from an SDC member who has one of the nine factory R-3 Avantis, maybe they can suggest where an additional 289 can be purchased.
