If you're going to use a SBC, I'd go with a newer driveline. Maybe a 700R4. This has an overdrive 4th gear, improving fuel mileage and will handle the torque of the modern engine without dealing with a second gear start. I'd also measure the rear axle and see if you can get Ford 8.8" rear end from a Ford Ranger. This rear end should be close. Just my opinion.

The 52 Commander would have had a Borg-Warner T-86 if it was a standard shift car. It would have had a Detroit Gear DG-200 if it had been an automatic.

Is it a plate type adapter or a bellhousing type? How does the clutch work with the adapter? Did you get the pilot bearing adapter with it?

Hoosier Machine Products, 312-314 Southeast Sixth st. Pendelton Oregon. and Trans Dapt P.O. Box 4157 Compton , Cal made them you might still be able to get one if they have any left. But you still need a pilot bearing and a few small pieces.

I once had a '65 Wagonaire. It came with a very tired 194 six, and it had a T96 tranny with overdrive. I installed a 283 V8 which would mate up to THAT PARTICULAR T96 because T96's made for '65 and '66 Studebakers had an input shaft designed to mate with the Chevy-type clutch. There was a cast-iron adaptor plate between the T96 tranny and the bellhousing. Anyway, that T96 lasted about 6 weeks before it blew up. They just cannot take the torque of the 283.
If you are going to use a Chevy engine, you had might as well use a Chevy transmission. Make it easier on yourself. Truth be told, even the T86 tranny is really only strong enough for sedate driving behind a Stude V8 or 283 Chev. If you drive it hard, or drag race, you will blow it up, too. And all Stude manuals, except for the T10 4 speed, have non-synchro low gear, which is kind of un-fun.
For the swap you contemplate, I'd really recommend either a TH700R4 automatic (or 200-4R), or else a manual 5-speed if you are like a standard shift. Might as well have synchro low, AND an overdrive top gear.
