The parking pawl on my Speedster appears to be broken as it will roll in Park. How difficult is it to replace it? Can it be done in the garage at home, or is a transmission specialist and/or special tools required? I'd like to fix it myself if possible.

A person with some transmission experience and a good assortment of tools could do this at home. You would definitely want to be armed with either the '55 Shop Manual, or the S.A.D. Manual. The parking pawl can be replaced with the transmission in the car, however the rear extension housing has to come off. There is an adjustment that can be made by removing just the oil pan.

Thanks Dwain. I've got the Shop Manual and a pretty good assortment of tools, BUT, I'm no transmission guy. I'll have to give it some thought before tackling this job.

Communicating via computer is sort of a form of IM, and the trouble with IMing is I often end up wishing I hadn't said something or wish I'd been more clear. So when I mentioned an adjustment, I meant there is an adjustment (shown in the manual) that could possibly restore the park position. It only requires removal of the transmission pan.

Dwain: Not to worry, your communication was quite clear and after reading your reply I was planning on looking in the shop manual for the pawl adjustment prior to getting any further involved. I don't know if it's broken or just out of adjustment. Thanks again.
