i have a 57 champion 2dr that has a locked up 6 i want to put a inline 6 in will a ford or chevy bolt to the trans or do i need a trans for it

"Nothing brand X will bolt in and would not be worth the effort if it could. First choice, buy a Studebaker V8 parts car for a few $100 and move everything over. Second choice, buy a brand X parts car and do the same at a lot more expense and labor.

Wouldn't a McKinnon 6 from a 65 or 66 Stude fit without much modification? They bolted up to the Stude transmission, but I have no idea what would be involved. He does say he wants to replace it with an inline 6 instead of a V8.

The tranny has a different main shaft and the clutch linkage would need to be fabbed up.

Motor mounts are different on a 65-66 Studes than on the 57, the 57 mounts are 1 1/2" higher and further back. You would have to remove all the rivits from the mounts and put later frame brackets in the other holes. Another fun job.

The '57s were the last year for the 2-piece driveshaft as well. Another thing to consider as far as an engine swap goes.[8D]

Bill, you might run into an issue of the engine compartment being to short for a Brand X 6 to go in there. The Champion 6 (your's should be 185cu.in. version) is fairly short as was their V8. Other 6s were l o n g e r and may have clearance problems.

Either way you go - even if you put a small block Chebby in it - you're gonna have numerous little things that you'll have to engineer such as throttle linkage, wiring, mounts, radiator compatability, etc., etc.. All do-able no doubt. But none if it will be "bolt-in" easy.[}:)]

I've always thought it'd be cool to put an overhead six in Dad's '57 Pelham- seems like this would be the same thing- but I haven't done it yet, so I can offer no advice one way or the other. My brother made it look easy enough to put a 400 SBC w/700R in his '59 Lark, but that's a whole 'nother story!!!

You could easily enough find another Champion six engine to put in your car (although it may be an older, 170 cu. in. version which may or may not have had its displacement increased by a rebuild).

Here is a rebuilt one that sold for $250 on eBay recently:

As for me, I recently bought one for $70, that's the same year as the original one in my truck. It's being rebuilt for me by GPO Automotive Machine Shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming. They say they have rebuilt approx. 25 Studebaker motors in the last year, 5 of them Champion sixes.

I'd find a Stude 6, or do a V8 conversion! It's already been 'played with', so a change under the hood wouldn't be bad either! For the record- the roof gives it away as a '58 Scotsman- or Champion w/o fins- it has '57 tail lights and grille, and late model wheels with '64/5ish hubcaps. Looks like a fun ride to play with some more- GOT FINS?
