View Full Version : Air shocks on a 65 Cruiser

Does anyone have any experience with air shocks on the back of a Lark type sedan? I've had several occasions where I've taken out the Cruiser with 6 passengers inside. The car rides fine, but really sits low in the back. I think my springs are okay, I just need some extra carrying capacity when the opportunity presents itself. If anybody has a particular shock and part number that would work it would be appreciated.

Studebaker sales literature, at least for 1964, lists air shocks as an option. I bought an NOS Studebaker kit for my '63 Wagonaire. It included shocks, hoses, valve, mounting instructions, template for where to drill the valve mounting hole. The air shocks helped the car a lot, both for overload and handling when normally loaded. The Studebaker air shock kit had an AC number that I don't have here. Try SASCO, SI, Stephan Allen, etc.

Just remember that air shocks are a Band-Aid for weak springs, and that shock mounts were designed for absorbing shocks and not carrying heavy loads. Occaisional loads (like you describe) they can be real handy. I have run both air shocks, and am currently running a pair of 'Timbren' type overload springs. I kind of like those because they are not something you have to mess with. They are there and don't come into play until your load pushes the rear of the car/truck down far enough to contact. Hence, no harsh ride.

I do know that air shocks are a band aid, so to speak. But, it just doesn't make economic sense to go through putting new, heavier springs on the back when I only have 6 passengers a few times a year. The big problem is that when I back out of my driveway, the tailpipe drags[}:)].

I really don't think I have a weak spring issue, just too much weight than the car was really designed for at the time. 6 people even in a Cruiser is a tight fit;) The overload spring idea might be just the trick I'm looking for as that would give me a bit more carrying capacity only when I need it

I've had air shocks in my Hawk for 4 years and have enjoyed the flexibility of being able to change the cars load carrying ability. I got mine through Dave Thebeault.

I PUT AIR SHOCKS ON MY '64 HT, 'CAUSE IT HIT THE REAR BUMPER WHEN I HAD THE KIDS IN THE BACK. AFTER I PUT THE SHOCKS ON, IT AMPLIFIED THE FACT THAT THE REAR BUSHINGS WERE SHOT! I HAD THE REAR SPRINGS REARCHED, ADDED A LEAF,ETC. ETC AND USE REGULAR HYDRAULIC SHOCKS NOW.
I THINK IF YOUR BUSHINGS ARE GOOD, AND THE SPRINGS AREN'T TOO RELAXED, THE AIR SHOCKS WOULD WORK GREAT!:D

THE BAD BUSHINGS WERE NOTICABLE ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER PUTTING ON THE AIR SHOCKS- LOUD CLUNKING NOISE FROM THE REAR END. I BELIEVE BY REPLACING THE OLD WORN OUT MUSHY SHOCKS WITH THE STIFFER AIR UNITS, IT CAUSED EXTRA STIFF MOVEMENT BOTH UP AND DOWN.
I NEVER DID PUT THE AIR SHOCKS BACK ON AFTER I REBUILT THE REAR END, I JUST DIDN'T NEED THEM (I ADDED A LEAF TO THE SPRINGS).
SORRY FOR THE DELAY, I HAD THE DAY OFF, AND CONSEQUENTLY WASTED IT![:p]
