Hmm,
looks like my old '66 Valiant. wonder if it is original, or even
accurate.

one piece, with separate cap.
top of cap to "5 QT full" mark, 20 3/4 inches
top of cap to "Add" mark, 21 1/2 inches.

Terry, past dealership experience has shown me that even dipsticks originally put in a car can be highly inaccurate. Even if you replace the dipstick with one from another '66, there are no guarantees. Like any other part on a car, volume parts are made to 'tolerences', and as such, can be all over the board.

I learned early that if the car's manual says it holds 5 quarts, give it 5 quarts. If you are worried about oil consumption, mark the dipstick where it indicates the 5 quarts you just added. Don't top off above the 5 quarts to meet some random mark. That can cause problems.

Terry, I measured the one out of my 63 Avanti that I have owned since 1969 and the lengths are 20.625 to the full and 21.4" to the add. Now that is to the inside of the cap on the bottom.

thanks for responding to the question I asked.

It looks like as I am measuring from the top of the cap, I am
20.50 to your 2.0624 and 21.25 to your 21.4. Well within tape measurement variation. conclusion: we have the same length.

next question:
I read somewhere that the STUDEBAKER Avanti 289 was a two piece stick, mine is ONE piece, with the pull end being a CHROMED loop from the same stick. Is that the same as yours?

Terry, On my car there is a short piece 13 1/2" long that has a bracket that bolts to head with a head bolt. The other piece is an 1 1/4" tube that U's out of the side of the pan with a triangular plate and has pipes of several diameters that go to the air cleaner, other places depending on model including the tube for the dipstick which should be about 6 1/2" from end to pan side.

Terry,
I think all the late model Stude dipsticks are one piece. I don't recall ever seeing one that was different. The Avantis and Jet Thrust cars got chromed versions while the standard cars made do with yellow paint, but in either case the metal underneath was the same, I think.

The stick itself is one piece. The dipstick tube is 2-piece :D

Thanks to all for putting this to bed. I do not know where I got the bad info. In conclusion, I very likely have an OEM Studebaker 289 dip stick, chromed.

THANKS!
