i have a 63, 170 ohv. i just bought a 120 amp alt from a junkyard, got it off a dodge ram charger. the thing will fit and work but my question is do i have to change my voltage regulator to a different type. right now i just have the one that was in the stude to begin with, dont remember off hand what make it is, but the original alt is 30 amps.
anyone have any input.

Why didn't you grab the regulator off the Dodge???[:0] I'd bet anything you're gonna hafta have an appropriate charger.[V]

honestly i just didnt think about it. i can be a very inpatient person at times, and the amount of time i was spending looking for an alternator was about my limit. so when i found it all i wanted to do was pull it and have it tested. my thoughts really didnt go any further.
but if i get the regulator from that car it'll work for the stude?

That regulator will work with that Alternator, but that isn't to say you won't have to modify the wiring in some way. Fact is, if you really feel you're gonna need the full capacity of that alternator's rated output, you'll damn sure have to change the wire's to the ammeter as well as find an ammeter that will accomodate 120amps.
I think it's unlikely you'd ever draw 120 amps from it but you could easily outdraw the amps your existing wiring's designed for and that could mean melted wire[xx(]
