I have a 1954 Studebaker Regal Commander 2dr ht
My question is about the use of Black paint under the hood. What sheen of Black paint is correct for the
Fan Shroud, Fan, Air Cleaner, Starter, Radiator Support, ect.
Should it be Gloss, Semi Gloss, Satin finish, or???
Thanks in advance as to advise on this matter.

I don't know the right answer to tell you, but here are some pages with photos of 1955 cars under the hood, which I found with Google's image search. (1954 engine turned up nothing helpful for your situation). I noticed that this first car has had the engine repainted in the correct 1955 Alberta Blue, so maybe they used the right black paint on the fan shroud, as well.

It seems to me that all of these have a black that tends more toward "semi-flat" than "semi-gloss".

Right on Dillo!I have all kinds of pieces from 53-54K's and they are all flat black or a very dull semi gloss and none really match, so some must have faded and some must have been repainted.

Gary, the GT Hawk judges at the International docked me for simi-gloss on the shroud, although I agree it was correct.

Eastwood sells spray cans of "Underhood Black," which is sort of half way between semi-gloss and flat black. It's an almost perfect match for GM cars, but I don't know what Stude judges would say. Eastwood doesn't make any specific claims for any particular car make.

Isn't it true that some of that paint may have actually been gloss from the factory, it was just cheap paint that the gloss went away real quick?

My answer of semi-gloss black for a 1953-1954 C/K was based on my many years as SDC authenticity judge for C/K bodies, much personal study of these cars and John Bridges' book on them.
