When I acquired this car, the left rear axles nut was so bad that it just slipped off in my hand as it had virtually no threads and the end of the axle shaft likewise is worn fairly smooth. I plan to try to get a 7/8" x 14 thread chaser to try and restore the threads. Any advice? I think SI has new axle shafts if it came to that, but trying to save the $ on this seemingly never ending project.

This is the first place you don't want to save money. Or maybe it's brakes. But buy a new axle. If the threads are as bad as you say, no amount of thread chaser is going to make them safe. The cost of the axle and installation is as nothing compared to the damage a lost wheel can cause.

throw out the nut while you're at it, too, so you don't try to use it again.

OK, thanks. New axle shaft, nut, and associated parts on order.

Now to find rear brake drums.
