I'm getting some oil spray out of the filler cap which gets a little messy. Will replacing the cap alleviate the problem?

Washing your existing cap out in a solvent parts washer might help.
Couple of items to think about...
a) How clean is your oil?
If your oil in the engine is old and sludgy, perhaps the drainback areas of the head are clogged up and the valve cover area is inundated with oil.
b) What is your oil pressure?
Have you serviced your oil pressure regulator valve? If this valve plunger sticks, you could have too much oil pressure, and possibly pump too much oil up top. Doubtful, but anything is possible.
c) What year engine? If your engine has a PCV valve ('63 on up), it may be clogged and your crankcase could be building up pressure and pushing some oil out the breathers.
d) How about blow by? If your rings are shot you might have excessive blow by that could cause that too, but you'd have several other symptoms to go along with that...

A. 1500 miles on last oil change-almost due to add a quart.
B. oil pressure is 40-60 range. Haven't checked oil pressure regulator valve.
C. '57 S. Hawk
D. Approx 7000 on rebuilt engine.

Ok.. 6, or V8?

If a V8, what part of the country?
(Thinking mud daubers and your road draft tube)
Is the filter mesh in the road draft tube clean?
Oil pressure sounds ok, but I would service the relief valve anyways, just to be sure..
1500 miles to a quart doesn't sound awful... But a bit high for only 7000 miles. Any leaks?

speaking of blowby... my '55 fails the "dollar bill" test at anything above a fast idle... but I have NO oil coming out the breathers, even though I am running aluminum valve covers with no baffles. Yes there is oil to the heads. I guess it would take a LOT of blowby to pump oil out... check the PCV first.

I am guessing in my case it is one or two stuck rings because when I changed the valve stem seals most of the cylinders didn't hiss at all under pressure but a one or two did. I'm hoping that just driving some would free them up.

If you have shop air and a spark plug adapter that's the easiest way to check for leaky rings...

I will take 1500 miles to a qt of oil. The top of the cylinders are getting lubed. Were Studebaker V8's non oil burners in their time? What range do folks accept for oil useage?[?]:)

My '64 259 runs great, has no significant blowby, and only leaks a quart every 800 miles.

Set a dollar bill or other thin, light piece of paper over the oil fill hole with the breather removed, should be sucked onto the hole by the vacuum pulled by the PCV and not flutter or blow off.

It's a V8, in southern Calif. Haven't checked the draft tube. Just had the engine re-sealed because it was leaking copius amount of oil. No leaks now. I'm thinking this started after the engine was re-sealed. Maybe that means there is more internal pressure. I'll start with the relief valve.

onto, not *into!* I don't think any engine would be running particularly well if it were generating that kind of vacuum in the crankcase, unless it was being mechanically scavenged!

Gary, I was just making the point that I *know* my car has blowby but it still isn't puking out oil... so were I the OP I would definitely be looking into seeing why there's so much blowby, stuck or worn rings?

In my case I think my engine is mostly solid, so I'll be trying to free them up... heard of a product called Auto-RX over on Bobistheoilguy, thinking of trying that once I get some of the more egregious oil leaks stopped up. Sounds like snake oil but enough people have spoken well of it that I'll give it a shot. Might try the old water down the carb trick too... But if I'd heard air leaking on all eight, I might be thinking new ring time...
