View Full Version : 1962 L-6 engine weight?

Does anyone know a pretty close weight for a L-6 engine? I may need to ship my old motor..complete, starter, gen and all. I was hoping to sell outright or maybe on E-bay. I need to get get an idea of what a good weight for freight would be..Thanks!!

504 lbs dry (no oil or coolant) with clutch.
That is if you're refering to the OHV Inline-6.

You'll be far better off selling it locally since freight will likely be more money then the engine will bring.

Thanks guys...I did have it for sale locally (South Bend In.) Had it sold, then the buyer backed out, of course after I pulled it and stopped the newspaper ad..Thanks!!! I did not get many calls on the ad..Are these engines good for boat anchors? Any other good uses?

To be honest, the market is very weak for the sixes, but if someone needs one nearby you could get lucky. I have to give themm away in my area just so they don't go to the dump.

Are the OHV sixes "bad" in some way, or just lower in power than folks want nowadays?

I think they're bad in two ways. V8s are just plain more desireable, and the early OHV 6 had problems with the heads cracking (especially when abused or overheated). Studebaker fixed that problem in 65:D.
