View Full Version : 61 Lark Dana 27 to 44 Change

Getting ready to pull the little Dana 27 and install a 44. Wondering if the drive shaft for the 27 will mate up to the 44 and be an acceptable length for the 44 yoke. Anyone know. Yokes appear the same size to the eyes. Trans is automatic behind a 259. Are there any surprises I need to be aware of on this swap?

Yokes appear to be the same but length depends on wheelbase.
What model is the car?? F,J,Y??????

U bolts(parts book refers to them as spring clips) will be wider and longer and the plates under the spring are different to match them.

Ok, got the 27 out and put the 44 in today. The 27 driveshaft measured 47 7/8" end to end (absent the yoke). To long for the 44. Test fitted a R-1 Avanti driveshaft (measured 47 5/8"). About 1 inch of travel on the yoke shaft after install. I prefer a little more. Anyone know the end to end driveshaft length of Larks with the 44 driveshaft. Are they at 47" end to end? Model is W-4 or 109 wheelbase I think. Looks actually shorter than 109. Thanks.

I once did the same thing you are doing. I assumed drive shaft would be fine but realized on first test drive something was wrong. Ended up having a drive shaft shop shorten by 3/4". I can't remember how I came up with 3/4", but it drives fine now.

Ok, thanks for the information. Will try and find a driveshaft.
