I had to replace the coil in my 62 GT Hawk and the local parts store gave me a coil that requires an external resistor, which they also had in stock. I'm confused; the Studebaker parts book appears to indicate that an external resistor coil is used on the 62-64 GT Hawks and is the same part number as that used on the 6 cylinder cars, however it doesn't show an external resistor for the 62-64 V-8's while it does for the 6's? Also I noticed when removing the old coil that it said that it was to be used with an external resistor, which wasn't used, could this be the reason it failed? Is an external resistor coil okay to use, does the external reisitor need to be used? What would happen if it wasn't?

Dan,

If the wire to the coil (from the harness) is pink, you shouldn't need a resistor. The resistor wire Stude used was color-coded solid pink. (Although it may have faded to some other hue in 40+ years, so you might have to look under where it's covered by some of the original taping to see what shade it is.);)

Miscreant at large.
