Ever since I put new brake pads on my 63 Hawk with power front disc brakes they squeal. I coated the pads on the back side before installing. Any help on eliminating the problem whould be appreciated.

The brake pads have a piece of metal bonded to the back of the lining. There is a slot in this backing metal. On the front of each piston, there is a pin that resembles the head of a nail. It is very important that the pin goes into the slot on the back of the pad. The pads can be installed with this pin behind the metal, which will crush the metal backing when the brakes are applied, and can lead to a squealing problem. I have also found that the pads should fit snugly over this pin. Sometimes bending the metal backing on the pads slightly can tighten up the fit, so that it takes a light push to install the pads, rather than them just dropping in loosely. This can also help reduce a squeal.
